The Story of Spencer

My name is Spencer. I was born on 8th July 2003, it was harvesting time as my name, Mugita, suggests. I am the fifth and last child in my late mother’s house. My first 8 months were full of hardship and tragedy. My father passed on when I was only a few days old, and my mother passed on when I was 8 months old. Immediately after the death of our father, my older siblings left for the streets, as my sickly mother was not able to cater to the food needs of all of us. I later learned that my parents were suffering from HIV aids.

8 months after the death of my father, our neighbor Phinora found me breastfeeding on my dead mother after my mother failed to leave our room for three days, making Phinora (our neighbor) suspect something was amiss in our house. She pushed the old door into our one-roomed house and found me crying with my mom’s right breast in my mouth. My mother had been dead for three or more days.

In March 2004, God came for me! Through Phinora, I joined CCMI and was taken care of by the lovely staff, especially the late Helen Kareka.  There I met Pastor Wicklife and his wife, Lilian. While Pastor Wicklife is a former street kid, his wife, Lilian, grew up as an orphan, having lost her father at a tender age.  At CCMI, I was introduced to Christ, who has changed my life and blessed me. I am fed, cared for, and loved by Pastor Wicklife, his wife, and the staff and teachers of CCMI. Today, I am experiencing new life in Christ. I gave my life to Christ in 2015 at the age of eleven and a half years.

I received my elementary education at the CCMI Orphans Academy and took the National KCPE (Kenya Certificate of Primary Education) exam in 2017. After the results were announced, our school, Christ Care Academy, was the best in the County. This was followed by the government allocating most of my classmates to some top schools in Kenya. I was enrolled in the prestigious Nyang’ori Boys' High School, courtesy of my excellent performance in sciences. For four years, my friend Samuel Cliff and I started and organized a Christian Union movement in our high school, which led to hundreds of students and teachers giving their lives to Christ.

By God's grace and your prayers, I sat and passed my KCSE (high school diploma) with flying colors in 2021. The government assigned me to a nursing course at Uzima University in Kisumu, while my great friend Samuel Cliff was enrolled in a law program 700 kilometers away at Chuka University. Though I have been in and out of class for the last 2 years, due to lack of school fees, Wicklife and Lilian have tried their best to keep me in college. While at Uzima University, I have had the privilege to introduce others to Jesus Christ. I am also the current Secretary General of the Nursing Students’ Association of Kenya.

I was privileged to be selected as one of the students representing Uzima University in the 2026 Erasmus+ Exchange Program. My departure is scheduled for 1st August 2026. The exchange program will run for two months (1st August – 29th September 2026) in Dresden, Germany, where I will participate in a research program focusing on mental health. As someone who is deeply passionate about mental health advocacy, I consider this an incredible opportunity to expand my knowledge and contribute to research in this important field. During the program, we will also attend the World Congress of Psychiatry in Stockholm, Sweden from 21st -23rd of September.

I am so very, very thankful to God for all the sponsors of CCMI.  I am praying for continued support from the generous partners of CCMI, so that I can continue my education. I have a few months to go in Nursing school. Wicklife asked me to start a clinic at CCMI, which I have started, and I continue to trust God for equipment and personnel. I want to be a nurse, and I will volunteer at Christ Care Hospital, which I, with the help of Wicklife, have set up at CCMI adjacent to the orphanage, to help reduce maternal mortality in this community.

Spencer

In September, Spencer gave a presentation at the 26th World Congress of Psychiatry in Stockholm Sweden. How far he has come! From orphanage to University to an international conference — God had big plans for this young man. CCMI was able to give Spencer a home and education thanks to the support of people like you.

Spencer’s story is just one of the many stories that can be told because of the sacrificial gifts of our donors. Again, on behalf of all the orphans, students, teachers, and staff of CCMI, we thank all our donors and prayer partners for their continued support. Without it, what we do would be impossible. To God be all the glory for all that is being accomplished.
